Gunfire at Great Mall attributed to self-inflicted shooting

Last night, at a quarter past 5, the Milpitas Police Department responded to reports of gunfire at The Great Mall. On arrival, they found a male San Francisco resident, age 22, suffering from a gunshot wound that was not life-threatening.

Paramedics rushed him to a local hospital while officers from a variety of jurisdictions secured and searched the mall.

While officers escorted customers and staff members out, two more medical emergencies — unrelated to the shooting — took place, and paramedics took both injured parties to a nearby hospital.

After detectives from the Special Investigations Unit investigated the initial incident, they arrived at the determination that the 22-year-old male’s gunshot wound had been self-inflicted. He had not been shot by another person.

It was 9:26pm when the officers completed their search of the Great Mall.

  1. This is why mandatory gun safety courses should be required when purchasing a firearm. Thankfully only the shooter was injured.
