Milpitas Police Department will run DUI checkpoint on November 6

This Saturday night, November 6, between the hours of 9pm and 3am, the Milpitas Police Department (MPD) Traffic Safety Unit will be out running a Driving Under the Influence (DUI)/Drivers License Checkpoint. The location will be at the intersection of Great Mall Parkway and South Abel Street. This location was selected on the basis of data gathered from prior crashes and arrests stemming from DUI.

Even a first-time DUI charge can result in, on average, $13,500 in fines and penalties. Those charged can also have their driver’s licenses suspended.

The idea of the checkpoint is to prevent driving under the influence and thus promote public safety among Milpitas residents. Officers will be looking for signs of inebriation among the drivers they stop. Said MPD in a statement, “The Milpitas Police Department is committed to keeping the public safe from intoxicated drivers. Driving while impaired is illegal, whether it’s alcohol, prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications or marijuana. If you plan on drinking, taking medications that can affect your ability to drive, or consuming marijuana designate a sober driver or use a ride-share service. If you suspect someone is driving while impaired, call 911. You just might save a life.”

The checkpoint’s funding came from a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
