Arson suspect in custody after setting fire at McDonald’s in Milpitas

Early this morning, June 12, at 2:38AM, the Milpitas Police Department (MPD) took a 911 call regarding the McDonald’s restaurant at 41 Ranch Drive.

The McDonald’s was on fire.

At the time, the location was closed and empty. An individual had been seen throwing something through one of the restaurant’s windows, shattering the glass and starting the fire before driving away.

Less than 3 minutes later, a MPD officer arrived on the scene. Another officer found the suspect half a mile away. Soon the Milpitas Fire Department (MFD) was able to extinguish the flames, capping the property damage at $150,000.

The suspect’s name is Tai Trinh. He was booked into Santa Clara County Main Jail on the charges of felony vandalism and arson. A Milpitas resident, Trinh was in the news in 2020 for vandalizing a string of Asian-owned businesses in San Jose and Milpitas.

Following today’s event, MPD put out a press release that read, “If you have any information regarding this investigation, you are encouraged to call the Milpitas Police Department at (408) 586-2400. Additionally, information can be given anonymously by calling the Crime Tip Hotline at (408) 586-2500 or online at: https://www.milpitas.gov/crimetip.”
