Wreaths Across America is an effort to honor our veterans by placing a wreath at their grave sites each December.
Gold Star parents of SPC Joseph A. Graves, who was killed in action on July 25th, 2006, organized a local event that took place at Golden Gate National Cemetery on December 19th.
Hundreds of volunteers met for a short ceremony and prayer and then joined together to honor our Veterans.
Due to COVID, the ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery was cancelled. Rather than cancel in San Francisco, the organizers decided to spread the wreaths throughout different sections of the cemetery instead of focusing on one specific area.
The volunteers, which included residents from Milpitas, placed over 9,000 wreaths at the gravesites. All wreaths were transported by Walmart and donated by various organizations and individuals across the United States. Each volunteer is asked to stop for a moment of reflection at each grave and say the veteran’s name before laying the wreath.
This past Saturday morning, amidst the chill and fog flowing through the lush hills and over the white gravestones and markers, volunteers met to retrieve the wreaths, which will be sent to a recycling center.
