William Lam looks forward to 4-year term on Milpitas City Council

A newcomer to Milpitas’ political scene, William Lam was sworn into office as a Councilmember on December 10, 2024. The Beat had an opportunity to connect with Lam and learn more about his plans for his four-year term.

The Milpitas Beat: How does it feel to be the newest member of the Milpitas City Council?

William Lam: I feel a mix of excitement and responsibility. Being part of a city council means having a direct influence on the community, which could be both exhilarating and humbling. The opportunity to address local issues, support city development, and advocate for residents’ needs would bring a sense of purpose. There might also be challenges in balancing different viewpoints, but ultimately, it would be rewarding to contribute to the city’s growth and well-being.

MB: What are your plans for your first term on the Milpitas City Council?

WL: I would focus on a few key areas during my first term to make a positive impact on the community.

Number one is Public Safety – to strengthen police-community relations by improving relationships between the police and the community, ensuring fairness, accountability, and trust.

I will exchange ideas with the Police Chief and lay out a plan to combat crime in Milpitas.

Also, increasing transparency in police operations is vital. Tracking police reports (especially for the people who filed the police reports) is a critical component of police transparency and accountability. It allows the public to monitor police activity, identify trends, and ensure that incidents are handled appropriately.

I will also improve quality of life in Milpitas – fixing up potholes, repairing sidewalks, resurfacing the roads, cleaning up the parks, and synchronizing the traffic lights on Calaveras Boulevard.

And managing the city budget responsibly is critical to ensuring that Milpitas can meet the needs of its residents while maintaining fiscal health. A responsible city budget prioritizes transparency, efficiency, and long-term sustainability, ensuring that funds are allocated to areas that will benefit the community and support strategic growth.

MB: What do you look forward to most about serving on the Council?

WL: The most exciting and fulfilling part would be making a tangible impact on the community.

One of the most rewarding parts of serving would be the opportunity to build deep, meaningful relationships with residents, local organizations, and city staff. I’d look forward to meeting residents from all walks of life, listening to their concerns, and collaborating on ways to address the challenges they face.

Serving on the council would provide a unique opportunity to work on the ground level to tackle some of the city’s most pressing issues, such as public safety, traffic congestion, and street repair. Being able to directly influence policies and decisions that will improve the quality of life for residents is a huge motivator.

Ensuring that Milpitas remains a safe place to live would be one of my top priorities. I’d look forward to improving public safety not only through stronger law enforcement but by investing in community-driven safety programs and prevention-focused initiatives. I’d be excited to work on programs that enhance safety while building trust between residents and law enforcement.

The Milpitas Beat: How will you use your strengths to contribute to the Council?

WL: I would leverage my strengths of persistence, hard work, problem-solving, and effective communication to drive positive change and effectively serve the community. These strengths complement each other and will be key to addressing the complex challenges facing the city.

Public service often requires navigating complex challenges that don’t have quick or easy solutions. With persistence, I would approach these problems with resilience. Whether dealing with budget constraints, conflicting interests, or long-standing issues, I would stay committed to finding solutions and ensuring that we don’t give up on important goals, even when the road gets tough.

Public service requires commitment, and I would be ready to put in the time and effort needed to get things done. From attending meetings and workshops to working with city departments and community groups, I would dedicate myself fully to serving Milpitas. I would use my strong work ethic to ensure that I’m accessible to constituents and responsive to resolve their issues in a timely and effective manner.

Solving problems on the council requires working closely with other members of the community, fellow council members, and city staff. I would collaborate with others to bring fresh ideas and viewpoints, and I would be open to considering a wide range of solutions to ensure we choose the most effective one.

Effective communication with my fellow council members is essential for problem-solving. Good communication builds trust. Effective Communication allows for the exchange of ideas and the ability to build consensus on key issues. I would ensure that all voices are heard and that we work together for the best possible outcomes.
