Trader Joe’s, the popular neighborhood grocery store chain, will open a store in Milpitas, according to a company spokesperson.
“We are planning to bring a store to Milpitas and are taking all of the necessary steps to make it happen,” said Kenya Friend-Daniel, the public relations director for Trader Joe’s, in an email to The Beat.
The grocery store chain has not yet confirmed an opening date, according to Friend-Daniel.
“We look forward to bringing a Trader Joe’s store to the Milpitas community,” Friend-Daniel said.
Rumors of a Trader Joe’s coming to Milpitas started to swirl after the company recently posted a public notice on a building on the 1300 block of McCandless Dr., indicating they had applied for an alcohol license.
Posting a public notice is mandated by the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control as part of the application process for an entity to legally serve alcohol.
Residents posted pictures of the notice on social media, leading to wide speculation about a Trader Joe’s store being on the way.
The chatter on Facebook and Nextdoor got so frequent that both Mayor Rich Tran and Councilmember Karina Dominguez wrote Facebook updates stating they couldn’t confirm or deny the rumors.
City of Milpitas officials were not immediately available for comment.
Trader Joe’s was founded in 1958 in Pasadena. It has since expanded to over 500 locations in 42 states and Washington, D.C. The chain is known for its organic food products — most of which are made in-house — and its environmentally-friendly policy.
Friend-Daniel added, “While I have few details to share at this time, I can tell you customers can expect what we pride ourselves on offering at all our stores: Great, quality products at everyday prices and the best-possible customer experience.”
