Name: Kelly Yip-Chuan
(Currently serving as a Board Member on Milpitas Unified School District’s Board of Education)
Running for: Milpitas Unified School District (MUSD) Governing School Board Member
Why are you running?
I am running for re-election because I believe in the value of good education. These past 4 years have only strengthened my commitment to ensuring our students continue to receive the best education possible. I recognized that the board can make a difference and it has increased my commitment. I am vested in our children, their education, and our community.
What’s the biggest problem facing MUSD schools right now? And how would you intend to solve it?
One of our biggest challenges right now is recruiting talented educators and retaining them. I would like to explore the options of offering incentives to attract newer teachers to our district. This could include educator housing. Furthermore, I would like to find ways to incentivize experienced educators to stay longer. All options should be examined and evaluated to recruit and keep the good ones.
What would your priorities be should you get elected?
Campus Safety for Students & Staff, Early Childhood Education, Alleviation of Overcrowding at MHS, Staff Recruitment, and Educator Housing.
What can you bring to the table that you feel no other candidate can bring?
I am the only candidate who has taught in the classroom and understands what our students and staff go through on a daily basis. I am currently serving as the School Board President. My previous roles included being the Vice President and Board Clerk of MUSD. Prior to my involvement on the school board, I have served as a School Site Council Chair, CBAC Vice Chair, and PTA President. I am currently a Board Director for the Milpitas Rotary Club and Milpitas Chamber. With my experience, dedication, and leadership, I am qualified to continue to lead our community as a school board member.
What makes the MUSD community – leadership, staff, students, families – so exceptional?
Milpitas Families (Students, Parents/Guardians, Grandparents, Uncles, Aunts, extended family members supporting our students), Teachers, Support Staff, MUSD Employees, Residents (including daytime residents) working together for the betterment of Milpitas. In addition, the City of Milpitas and MUSD collaborate with each other to make the MUSD Community so exceptional.
Where do you see MUSD schools 10 years from now?
Ten years from now, MUSD will be one of the world’s best top-notch schools out there. We will have solved the educator housing issue and will have found a solution to retaining our best talents. Our Innovation Campus will already be fully functional with the best staff working at each school site while providing opportunities and multiple pathways for our future leaders.
What do you think is the most exciting thing happening at MUSD right now?
There are several exciting things happening at MUSD right now. The one that stands out the most is our Innovation Campus. We are excited for this campus to be completed because it’s the first of its kind; a state-of-the-art campus that will take us to another level in how we educate and produce future leaders.
Who is your inspiration, and why?
My family and my community are my biggest inspirations. Since my family and I moved to Milpitas in 2008, we have been welcomed by the amazing neighbors and friendly towns. My husband and I got to know so many people, so getting involved came naturally. I want to give back to my community and help make the place where I live and work one of the best places in the Bay Area. I also want to teach my children the importance of giving back.
Can you tell us one interesting thing about yourself that other people don’t really know about?
I have over 50 first cousins just on my mom’s side. My maternal grandmother had 10 children.
What’s your favorite spot in Milpitas?
My favorite place in Milpitas is Ed Levin Park. It’s not far from our home and it’s a great outdoor area to just get away for a short time. I love to go hiking there with my family and friends.
What do you love most about Milpitas?
I love the diversity in Milpitas. We are a blended community and respect one another’s cultures.
