At this week’s Milpitas Unified School District (MUSD) Board of Education meeting, the November election results were certified and an oath of office ceremony was held.
Assemblymember Alex Lee and Santa Clara County Supervisor Otto Lee were present to swear in three individuals: Chris Norwood and Kelly Yip-Chuan, who were both re-elected to their seats; and Anu Nakka, who is holding public office for the first time.
“I’m totally honored and blessed to be here to serve the Milpitas Unified School District…” said Nakka from her new seat on the dais.
Nakka, who has two daughters that attend schools in the district, has been active on various PTA boards for years.

Norwood, who is entering his third term on MUSD’s Board of Education, thanked the voters of Milpitas for giving him the opportunity to continue to serve…
“As a product of Milpitas schools myself, I’m extremely proud to be able to serve for four more years to continue the work that we began,” Norwood stated.
Kelly Yip-Chuan, who is entering her second term on the board, also shared some words: “I’m very honored to be serving the next four years. Thank you again for all your support.”
At the meeting, the Board voted to appoint Chris Norwood as President, Minh Ngo as Vice President, and Kelly Yip-Chuan as Clerk. Board positions are voted on once a year.

Michael Tsai, who served on the board for the last four years, concluded his term last night. During his time on the board, Tsai has had some friction with the other members; in the middle of his term, he was censured. Tsai ran unsuccessfully for Milpitas City Council in this past November election.

MUSD Board Member Hon Lien won first place in her bid for City Council, and will be sworn in next week. After Lien leaves her school board seat, MUSD will need to undergo a process to fill the vacancy. In the Board Bylaws, it states that they may fill the vacancy by either ordering an election or going through an appointment process. A district representative informed The Beat that the Board would discuss how to proceed with this item at a future meeting.
