Hi there! How was your weekend? I hope it was great—mine was full of exciting events. Let me tell you what I got to see on Saturday…
My day started at 8 a.m. at the Milpitas High School football field for the annual Milpitas Elementary Olympics (MEO). Students from all ten elementary schools joined in fun Olympic-style games. These events showed off their fitness, teamwork, and good sportsmanship. It was amazing to see the whole community come together—families, PTAs, businesses, and more—to celebrate our students and our diversity.
At 9 a.m., I visited the high school music department for the Music in the Parks festival. Music groups from all over the Bay Area came to perform and get feedback from expert judges. I listened to some of the groups, and they were fantastic! The MHS Music Boosters and Band worked hard to host almost 150 ensembles this year.
After that, I visited the Newcomers Academy at our Innovation Campus. This program helps students who are new to learning English. For eight Saturdays, they’ve been working hard on their language skills. This was their last day of the session, so the board stopped by to celebrate and cheer them on. Even some of the parents started learning English while they waited for their kids!
Later, I went to Rancho Middle School for the KIPR Botball Tournament. Middle school students built robots to complete tasks on a special map. These robots weren’t controlled by remote—students had to program them using sensors. It was exciting to see how much our Rancho and Russell students learned.
I ended the day by hosting an event with Assemblyman Alex Lee to celebrate Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month. We honored Tonichi Lorenzana, an MHS teacher who helped create the school’s first Ethnic Studies course and supports students in various cultural clubs. We also recognized Swati Shah and Rachelle Currie for their work in the Milpitas community. These folks embody what we hope for in our students: quiet, dedicated, hard workers who improve our community.
Why am I telling you all this? MUSD is full of great opportunities for students. Our community—families, teachers, staff, and volunteers—all work together to support learning. I believe MUSD tries to help each student discover what they love and prepare them to make a difference in the world. Our district is proud to provide our learners with many pathways to ignite their passion. By nurturing that passion, we can help our students reach their goals.
Our diversity makes us stronger. It gives students a richer, real-world education. Our teachers and staff work hard to provide every student with a personal and meaningful experience. We build community through our Culture of We.
