MUSD Board of Education elects new officers for 2021; Norwood voted in as President

At MUSD’s Tuesday school board meeting, Chris Norwood was voted in as President for the second time.

In addition, Kelly Yip-Chuan was made Vice President, and Hon Lien, who served as President for this past year, was voted in as Clerk.

This board meeting was the annual organization meeting, wherein officers are elected to serve for the following year. Four board members voted for all three to be elected, but Trustee Michael Tsai abstained on all three votes.

Said Norwood by text in regard to his forthcoming term:

“As I prepare for my second term as Board President, I have my 5 items on my personal bucket list.

  1. HONOR the hard work, lessons learned, and new practices developed by the MUSD Team, Board of Trustees, and students during the participation and execution of MUSD EducatEverywhere during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  2. HELP our Community-Based Organizations, Grass Roots Organizers, and Parents support each other and the wide variety of needs of MUSD students and families.
  3. HOST MUSD Table Talks, convenings, and conversations with strategic partnerships regarding the future of Milpitas education post COVID-19, workforce development, and the acceleration of the 4th Industrial Revolution.
  4. HIGHLIGHT the diversity of MUSD as the biggest strength of the ‘Culture of We’ and our ability to solve challenges as a caring and thoughtful community.
  5. HEAR about our strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats concerning MUSD caused by COVID-19 from staff, local businesses, residents, parents, and students who have a vested interest and commitment to our success.”

Earlier this month, Norwood was recognized by the California School Boards Association (CSBA) as 2020 Board Member of the Year, and received the Golden Gavel Award. He was up against approximately 5,000 other board members serving school districts throughout the state of California.
