Milpitas to increase police presence around shopping areas during holiday season

Over the Christmas holiday, more Milpitas Police Department (MPD) officers will be present in and near the city’s retail outlets. This is due to a higher amount of shoppers, which brings a higher amount of store and vehicle theft.

Said Mayor Carmen Montano in a City of Milpitas press release, “Our City is home to Great Mall, the largest enclosed retail outlet shopping in Northern California, an array of local shops, discount stores, commercial establishments, and entertainment and dining options, making it a destination for locals and tourists alike. We want everyone to shop with confidence knowing that the City has implemented comprehensive safety protocols to ensure that their visit is as safe as it is enjoyable. More importantly, we all need to play an active role in ensuring our own safety and the safety of those around us.”

With that in mind, busy shopping areas will see more police officers on patrol. Meanwhile, the City will be using social media, traditional media, and newsletter outreach to provide tips on avoiding scams and staying secure. Also, in partnership with local businesses, the City of Milpitas plans on holding workshops for retail staff members, teaching them how to resolve conflicts, respond to emergencies, and identify suspicious behavior.

Milpitas Police Chief Jared Hernandez said in the release, “Effective crime fighting involves prevention, deterrence, and enforcement. Our officers do a great job every day and what we know is that our work is most effective when it is in partnership with our community. We’re fortunate to have citizens and a business community that is committed to reducing crime with us.”
