Citywide, a variety of Milpitas residents are registered as convicted arsons or sex offenders. Yesterday, on July 25, the Milpitas Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Bureau and Special Investigations Unit checked on all such registrants’ compliance.Â
Also involved in the checks were the Santa Clara County Probation Department–Sex Offender Unit, Santa Clara County Sexual Assault Felony Enforcement (S.A.F.E.) Team, and U.S. Marshals service. Personnel from these entities ran checks to ensure up-to-date addresses and overall compliance — 93 of them in total — on the part of registrants, so as to comply with state law.Â
These checks took place in person; the participating detectives, agents, and officers wore apparel bearing law enforcement insignias, rather than standard-issue police uniforms.Â
Contrary to recent social media rumors, none of these checks had anything to do with immigration. As a matter of policy, Milpitas Police officers do not inquire as to residents’ immigration status during such checks.
