Milpitas Mayor Carmen Montano has announced her campaign for re-election this coming November. If she wins this coming November, it would be her third term as mayor.
“Serving as Mayor of Milpitas has been the greatest honor of my life,” said Mayor Montano. “Together, we have made meaningful progress in strengthening public safety, supporting our local economy, investing in our neighborhoods, and improving quality of life. There is more work ahead, and I am asking for your support to continue building a stronger, safer, and more prosperous Milpitas for everyone.”
If re-elected, Montano’s priorities would be strengthening public safety and emergency preparedness; expanding affordable housing while preserving neighborhood character; supporting local businesses and attracting quality economic development; investing in infrastructure, parks, and transportation improvements; and maintaining fiscal responsibility and transparent, accountable government.
This past June, Montano lost the primary election in the California Senate District 10 race after receiving 9.5% of the vote. Scott Sakakihara, who received 29% of the vote, and Linda Price, who received 23.1%, are both advancing to the general election.
Mayor Montano has served as a councilmember for two nonconsecutive terms. She first served from 2012 to 2016, and then from 2018 to 2022. She became mayor in 2022 and has gone on to serve a second term, which started in 2024.
Under Milpitas’ Municipal Code, residents in the councilmember and mayor roles can serve a total of 10 consecutive years. The mayoral role specifically is limited to six consecutive years (or three terms) of service, while councilmembers are able to serve for two consecutive four-year terms.
After those milestones, they must sit out for a “cooling off” period of at least two years before they can run again (and the term limits reset).
In a recent release, Montano mentioned that she is looking forward to “meeting with residents throughout the campaign to discuss their priorities and continue working together to shape the future of Milpitas.”
At present, Hon Lien, who currently serves on the Milpitas City Council, has also shared her intention to run for mayor on social media.
So far, no one else has entered the race, but it’s still early…
