On Saturday, November 3, the Milpitas Democratic Club hosted an Immigration Forum at the Milpitas Police Department.
Panelists included Zahra Billoo (Executive Director of The Council of American-Islamic Relations), Armando Corpuz (Chief of Police for Milpitas), Reverend Jeff Moore (President of San Jose/SV Chapter of the NAACP), Maria Love (Director of Santa Clara County’s Office of Immigrant Relations), Gurudev Sandhu (Executive Director of Gurudwara Singh Sabha), and Marty Riker (a Mechanical Engineer at Applied Materials).
Vidya Ullal, a Management Consultant in High Tech & Head Speech Coach at Saratoga High, served as moderator for the event.
As it was a few days before the November 6 election, some City Council/Mayoral/School Board candidates were also present to deliver statements throughout.
Organized by the club’s President Deepka Lalwani, the panel conversation took on many different dimensions, delving into some of the panelists’ personal family experiences with immigration, along with different ways of understanding and approaching immigration in the present and into the future. Here are a couple of clips from the discussion:
