Milpitas’ Community Garden program still accepting applications for new plots

Milpitas’ Community Garden Program has announced a new location where city residents can grow organic vegetables while making new friends…

The new addition is called the Delano Manongs Community Garden. It will come complete with 22 raised beds, 2 of which will be ADA-compliant and set on wheels. The community garden will be located at Delano Manongs Park, along McCandless Drive. Said a City of Milpitas call for applications, “Gardeners can cultivate their organic vegetables here while enjoying the benefits of a healthy and active lifestyle.”

To apply, one must be 18 or older. Low-income residents dwelling in multi-family housing within a 2.5-mile radius of the garden will be given priority status. Those applicants will also need to be receiving City, County, State, or Federal assistance, and be able to show 2 forms of proof of address and income qualification. Those living in multi-family housing within a 2.5-mile radius of the garden who can give 2 forms of proof of address will be granted second-tier consideration. Those living outside the 2.5-mile radius can apply, as well, but their applications will be granted third-tier status.

Residents can apply online or at the Barbara Lee Senior Center (40 N. Milpitas Blvd.). Plots will start being awarded on September 25 per the priority tiers described above, and if there are still plots remaining after the priority system has been applied, they will be awarded based on the order of the applications received (all applications will be dated and time-stamped upon receipt by the City).
