Latest Milpitas election results: Mayor Tran wins third term, Phan and Chua hold on to lead for Council

Note: The numbers in this article are from the night of November 4. Updates to numbers are below each section.

This is how things look with current Milpitas election results:

Mayor

Rich Tran has won his third term as Mayor with 67.8% of the vote so far. Retired geologist Voltaire Montemayor conceded the race earlier this morning, wishing Tran well. Montemayor came in with 16.7% of the vote. Pete McHugh, who has served five terms as Mayor of Milpitas, dropped out of the race in August, but it was too late to have his name removed from the ballot. McHugh received 15.46% of the vote.

Update: As of the night of 11/5, Tran has 68.31%; Montemayor has 16.73%.

City Council

Out of eight City Council candidates, Incumbent Anthony Phan currently has the most votes at 19.54% of the total. Second to Phan is Evelyn Chua, a City of Milpitas Planning Commissioner, with 18.79% of the vote. If these leads continue to hold, Phan will hold his seat, and Chua will fill Councilmember Bob Nuñez’s seat. Nuñez currently has 16.62% of the vote.

Update: As of the night of 11/5, Phan has 19.64% with 6,460 votes; and Chua has 18.9% with 6,217 votes.

Measure F

The City’s use tax measure seems likely to pass with 60.83% of the vote so far. As stated on our Live Blog last night, this quarter cent tax increase “is expected to raise an estimated $6.5 million over eight years for police, fire and other city services. The city says the revenue is needed to help combat budget cuts the city is facing due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But opponents of the measure claim that the measure will disproportionately affect lower-income residents who have already been burdened by the pandemic.”

Update: As of the night of 11/5, “yes” votes for Measure F are at 60.34%; “no” votes are at 39.66%.

Other noteworthy races

Alex Lee has won the Assembly District 25 race against challenger Bob Brunton, and will be stepping in to fill current Assemblymember Kansen Chu’s seat. More details on that in our story here.

In the San Jose-Evergreen Community College District race, Bob Livengood seems likely to secure a Trustee #1 board seat. He has 58.5% of the vote. Incumbent Rudy Nasol has 41.5%.

And Otto Lee is on a path to securing a Santa Clara County Supervisor seat with 60.44% of the vote. Kansen Chu currently has 39.56% of the vote.

Ballots are still being counted. To look up more information on races in Santa Clara County, go here.
