HeadlinesFlood watch in effect for whole Bay Area

Flood watch in effect for whole Bay Area

A flood watch has been issued for the whole Bay Area, starting today (Thursday, March 9) in the afternoon and ending on Sunday (March 12) morning.

The watch was issued by the U.S. National Weather Service. An atmospheric river (a “river in the sky” carrying a high amount of water vapor) is heading toward the region, spurring authorities to advise residents to take precautions…

Bay Area residents can expect to see bodies of water rising rapidly, along with flash flooding on the roadways and intensified traffic and delays. Steep hillside areas also might see mudslide activity.

The County’s Office of Supportive Housing has advised unhoused residents to make their way to warming centers (see link and list below). People seeking more info about warming centers can phone the Here 4 You Hotline at 408-385-2400 between 9 am and 8:30 pm while the flood watch is in effect. Unhoused people in San Jose can call 408-539-2105 or email owlreferrals@homefirstscc.org to attain an Overnight Warming Location (OWL) bed. Unsheltered residents in or near Morgan Hill, Gilroy, and San Martin can make their way to the Community Christian Church Overnight Warming Location located at 17640 Crest Ave. in Morgan Hill.

Area residents are advised to avoid burning charcoal or other flammable materials in enclosed spaces so as to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. Motorists should travel with caution and be on alert for slick roads and flooding. If outdoors, people should layer up their clothing and wear waterproof, insulated boots – though staying indoors as much as possible is advisable. People should also stay hydrated by drinking ample water with electrolytes.

The risk of getting hypothermia and experiencing a dangerously low body temperature (below 95 degrees Fahrenheit) increases in cold weather, particularly for senior citizens and very young children, or those using alcohol, drugs, or medications. Those experiencing confusion, dizziness, exhaustion, shivering, clumsiness, slurred speech, a weak pulse, shallow breathing, or a loss of consciousness might be having the symptoms of hypothermia.
