The Milpitas Police Officers’ Association (MPOA) and the City of Milpitas have successfully concluded a recent round of labor negotiations, leading to an updated contract for law enforcement personnel complete with competitive benefits and wages.

Said Mayor Carmen Montano in a press release, “By working together, we have achieved a result that strengthens our partnership with law enforcement and reaffirms our commitment to public safety and community engagement.”

Per the terms of the agreement, both sworn and non-sworn employees (“sworn” meaning those who can carry out arrests, apply force, and carry firearms and “non-sworn” meaning those without such powers) will see base salary increases over the next three years.

Sworn Employees:

Year 1: 6.5% base salary increase

Year 2: 5.0% base salary increase

Year 3: 4.0% base salary increase

Non-Sworn Employees:

Year 1: 6.5% base salary increase

Year 2: 3.0% base salary increase

Year 3: 3.0% base salary increase

Meanwhile, sworn employees who attain Crisis Intervention Training (CIT) certification will also be eligible for 2.5 percent in incentive pay.

Added Councilmember Hon Lien in the release, “I commend both negotiating teams for their hard work and dedication in reaching this milestone, and I look forward to the positive impact this agreement will have on our City.”

  1. Something that was failed to be mentioned in the article was that the Milpitas POA in November of 2020 (COVID) approached the City Council about how could the Milpitas POA assist in the budget short fall that was coming due to very low sales and Transient Occupancy Tax (TOT) revenue, The Milpitas POA and the city eliminated the 5% base salary increase effective the first full pay period in January 2021.
