ElectionsAn Interview with District 25 State Assembly Candidate: Jim Canova

An Interview with District 25 State Assembly Candidate: Jim Canova

Why are you running for State Assembly?

I will work to reconcile the competing needs for infrastructure, transportation, preservation of open space, utilities, and public safety. I recognize the importance of a healthy environment which is synonymous with a vibrant economy. This is the foundation for smart growth in the 21st century.

What do you love most about District 25?

As your representative in the California State Assembly District 25, I will be honored to represent all constituents from Fremont, Newark, Milpitas, North San Jose, Berryessa, Alviso and Santa Clara.

If elected, what would your legislative priorities be?

As your Assembly Member, I will be dedicated to restoring direct funding to Career Technical Education Centers, increasing K-12 funding to the national average, protecting existing housing and expanding affordable housing.

Where should the state’s priorities be in terms of K-12 education? Do you have any proposals/ideas for increasing funding in education?

As your Assembly Member, I will be dedicated to restoring direct funding to Career Technical Education Centers & increasing K-12 funding to the national average.

Any proposals for bringing more affordable housing to our region?

The recognition of protecting and preserving our existing affordable housing stock. We are moving towards becoming a region where the vast majority of us are renters. Renting is less secure housing as a rent increase can trigger the loss of that housing. True, long-term, affordable and stable housing can only be found through home ownership. Sacramento needs to build more pathways for the citizens & families of California to enjoy home ownership.

Do you have any ideas that would help our state government function more effectively?

To truly partner with local government and create regional solutions that work without overriding the autonomy of local government.

What do you think the biggest issue is that’s impacting residents in our district, and how do you intend to help fix it?

I will work to reconcile the competing needs for infrastructure, transportation, preservation of open space, utilities, and public safety. I recognize the importance of a healthy environment which is synonymous with a vibrant economy. This is the foundation for smart growth in the 21st century.

What is something unique that you bring to the table?

I have a track record of success in working with members of Congress, our state representatives, and local government officials. During my tenure as a school district governing board member, I advocated for successful passage of $1.5B in facility improvement and construction bonds, expansion of Career Technical Grant Funding by millions of dollars and championed the process to build three new schools at the Agnews Campus in North San Jose.

What is something that not everyone might know about you?

Assemblymember Kansen Chu was the special guest speaker at my kickoff event and has donated to my campaign along with the Mayor of Santa Clara, Lisa Gillmor. I have received endorsements from Santa Clara City Council members Teresa O’Neill, Kathy Watanabe, Debi Davis, and Raj Chahal as well as from West Valley Mission College Board member Karl Watanabe, and other local government officials.

What do you love to do in your spare time?

Love long distance cycling. Participated in many 100 mile [century] charity rides!

Anything else you’d like to share?

I have owned a small business for 30 years.

Where can people go to learn more about you?

 www.jimcanovaassembly2020.com

And finally, why should people vote for you?
