A Milpitas mayoral candidate’s journey to give back to America

Sponsored Post paid for by Hon for Milpitas Mayor 2024 FPPC# 1464067

My father suffered a stroke and passed away shortly after he delivered my family safely in the U.S.

Thanks to the support and guidance of a kind family, we have successfully coped with the difficulties faced by new immigrants.

Such loving encouragement and guidance have made my life a constant mission to repay America for its kindness.

I believe that each of us, within our capability, should do our part to serve America. On that premise and belief, I have offered my services in different capacities, and over a decade long I focused my services to the people of our Milpitas community.

Through my services I have learned, and from what I have learned, I have served.

My background as Vice-President in Commercial Banking of United Commercial Bank (East West Bank), along with founding 4 companies, taught me fiscal responsibility.  Serving as a Trustee for Lincoln Law School helped me understand the importance of ethics and application of laws. I’ve had so many opportunities to learn and serve.

Some of my current efforts and focus are:

  • I serve as the HR Director and Finance Executive for a company that provides advanced data analytics to pharmaceutical companies and healthcare providers to prevent glaucoma.
  • In our Milpitas Rotary Group I am the Advisor for an anti-sex trafficking organization helping young women and young men. We help keep them in school as a way of keeping them out of the hands of predators.
  • A group of us who had the desire to make a difference to incarcerated youth, visit Juvenile Hall several times each year to provide food and life skills to the youth.  I also just joined our local Kiwanis Club because of their focus on serving the children in Milpitas.

The U.S. Immigration Department is merciless when it comes to screening new immigrants. Those that don’t speak English or have English as a second language are already at a disadvantage, so I volunteer as a translator for Vietnamese and Chinese immigrants who are applying for visas.

Nothing comes without adversity. I have learned to stay focused and to not allow irrelevant distractions to interfere with my services.

Since my announcement of running for Milpitas Mayor, the following adversarial distractions have been launched against me:

  • I have been attacked for the clothes I wore while serving the homeless.
  • I have been accused of evicting a Mother and Daughter in Vietnam even though I don’t and never have owned any property there.
  • A friend intervened when he thought I was in danger of an Asian Hate incident, then he was accused of assault while protecting me.  I felt powerless to help him against this false accusation.
  • People expect me to answer questions that start out with a lie, and then criticize me because I refuse to respond.
  • Our campaign has received emails and had signs defaced that were purely Asian Hate incidents.

In my short time on the City Council I have visited Washington D.C., where I learned and brought back to City Staff the information to secure a 2.9 million dollar grant focused on pedestrian safety around schools. I was also the lone vote against approving an unlimited budget for the attorney’s defending the City in the former City-Manager’s lawsuit; and I was the lone vote against renaming the library until we had valid input from the community and followed the established naming policy.

I am running for Mayor because I believe in the potential of our community. I am determined to raise our level of professionalism on the Council and improve our reputation within the County and State. Over the years, I have seen both the challenges and the opportunities that we face, and I am determined to bring about the positive changes we all deserve.

My vision is to create a City where everyone has access to quality public services, where businesses thrive, and where residents believe their voices are being heard.

As to those adversities, I remind myself of the story of the rose that grew from concrete.

I am humbly asking you to vote for me, Hon Lien, for Mayor.
