Yesterday, March 31, at around 3:50 in the afternoon, various reports of a fight among juveniles came in to the Milpitas Police Department (MPD). The incident was unfolding near Vienna Drive’s 240 block, close to Milpitas High School.
Less than 3 minutes later, officers pulled up to find a 17-year-old male who appeared to have been stabbed. A second victim, a 16-year-old female, had sustained injuries, as well.
The boy’s family later identified him as Jarred Cavan, according to NBC Bay Area. He passed away at a nearby hospital. The girl was treated and discharged.
Jarred and the girl were boyfriend and girlfriend, and Jarred was soon to graduate from Milpitas High School. The girl had intervened and attempted to stop the fight.
Another 17-year-old male was arrested and booked into Santa Clara County Juvenile Hall, charged with homicide and assault with a deadly weapon.
Milpitas Unified School District Superintendent Cheryl Jordan wrote in a statement this afternoon, “The Milpitas Police Department has released this Press Release about a community incident that occurred yesterday afternoon, which did not take place on a MUSD campus. This news is profoundly sad and we grieve with our community. Our hearts go out to the family and friends during this difficult time.”
